It’s hard to believe that some of the beautiful and talented actors we see in movies and on T.V are actually grandparents! In spite of all their fame and fortune, to their grandchildren they are simply Grandma or Grandpa, or Glam-ma in Goldie Hawn’s case.
In honor of Grandparent’s Day, here are our top ten celebrity grandparents, in no particular order.
1. Goldie Hawn
The beautiful and stunning actress, Goldie Hawn became a grandmother at the age of 58 when her daughter Kate Hudson gave birth to Ryder Russel in 2004.
Goldie was hesitant to be called “grandma” because as she said, it is “a word that had so many connotations of old age and decrepitude”, so when her son came up with “Glam-Ma,” she thought it was “quite brilliant” and so it stuck! She is now the grandma of four beautiful grandchildren, and describes being a grandparent as “Love with a capital L.”
2. Jim Carey
The hilarious and comedic actor Jim Carey became a grandfather at the age of 47, when his daughter gave birth to her son, Jackson Riley Santana on February 27th, 2010.
Carrey describes the day he became a grandpa as “an explosion of pure bliss” and in talking about his grandson he says, “he’s the coolest dude on earth, unless he gets tired and then he’s a marauding maniac!” Many photos taken of this celeb show him relishing in his new role of being a grandpa!
3. Blythe Danner
Blythe Danner plays a wonderful grandma both on screen and off. In the recent movie release “The Lucky One” Blythe plays the wise, yet funny grandmother providing fitting advice and comic relief.
In an interview with Blythe on being a grandmother, and playing a grandmother she said, “As a grandmother I’m very goofy. I’m silly. I just love to get down on the ground. They are very wise. I learn a lot from them, just as I have from my children.”
Blythe became a real life grandmother in 2004, when her well known daughter Gwyneth Paltrow gave birth to her daughter Apple Blythe Alison Martin. She became a grandma of two, when Gwyneth had son Moses Bruce Anthony Martin in 2006. Blythe never wanted to be called grandma, so at first she tried to get Apple to call her “Woof”; however, Apple came up with the name “Lalo”, which seemed to stick!
4. Pierce Brosnan
The talented and handsome Peirce Brosnan became a grandfather in 1998, when his adopted daughter Charlotte gave birth to her daughter, Isabelle Sophie. This was just six years after he was named People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive.” Brosnan says, “to be a grandfather and a sex symbol in the same sentence is a joy.” He became a grandfather for the second time when his daughter had son Lucas, in 2005. Brosnan remarried and became a father in 2001, making his granddaughter Isabelle, three years older than her uncle!
5. Ron Howard
Director and child star, Ron Howard became a grandfather when his oldest daughter Bryce gave birth to her son Theodore Norman Howard Gabel, in February 2007. His daughter and her husband had a second child, Beatrice Jean Howard Gabel in January 2012, making Howard a grandfather twice!
Ron describes being a grandparent as a “profound experience” and says he “enjoys sharing tacitly with other grandparents…there is this sort of wink and a nod like its sort of a club or something.” His greatest achievement in life is that he has been able to have “Forty-eight consecutive years of steady employment in the television and film industry, while preserving a rich family life”.
6. Whoopi Goldberg
Comedian, actor and The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg became a grandmother at the young age of 34, when her 16 year old daughter Alexandria gave birth to her daughter, Amarah Skye.
“I accepted the grandmother thing in my thirties,” she once told the Daily Mail, “But great-grandchildren I’m not doing.” Currently Goldberg is the “Granny” to three grandchildren from her daughter Alexandria, Amarah Martin (1989), Jerzey Martin (1995), and Mason (1999). Despite her reluctance to great grandparenthood, her grandchildren are plenty old enough to make it a reality!
7. Donny Osmond
Singer, musician, actor, dancer, radio personality and former teen idol Donny Osmond, became a grandfather at the age of 47, when his second son Jeremy and his wife Melissa welcomed their son Dylan James in August 2005. In February 2008, his second grandchild, Emery Anne, was also born to Jeremy and Melissa. His son Brandon and daughter in law Shelby had their third grandson, and they are currently expecting another son.
Donny is now looking forward to his fifth grandchild after his eldest son, Don Jr., surprised his father in June of this year, on an episode of “The Talk”, to announce that he and his wife Jessica are expecting their first child. In talking about being a grandparent, Donny says, “I don’t know if I can put it into words what it means to be a grandfather, but the easiest way I can say it is I don’t feel the responsibility of the teaching process, just the loving process…You love him and then you send him home.”
8. Harrison Ford
Indiana Jones actor, Harrison Ford, is a father of five, and a grandfather of three. He is a very private about his personal life, and has kept his family out of the spotlight.
He first became a grandfather in 1993, when his grandson Eliel was born. His second grandchild Giuliana was born in 1997, and his third grandchild Ethan, was born in 2010. Harrison’s oldest grandchild, Eliel, is almost twice the age of his adopted son Liam.
In response to being asked what his secret to being young is Harrison replied, “I have a young child who is nine years old. I want to live as long as I can to see him grow up. I have grandchildren, young grandchildren. I am enjoying my life. I want to stick around for as long as I can.”
9. Tom Hanks
The gifted, and award winning actor Tom Hanks became a grandfather in February 2011, when his son Colin and his wife welcomed a baby girl named Olivia. In an interview with Letterman, Tom said, “My granddaughter is magnificent…and I just don’t see her enough. He describes spending time with his granddaughter “better then TV.”
10. Lionel Ritchie
Veteran singer-songwriter Lionel Richie became a grandpa at the age of 62, when his daughter Nichole Richie and her husband welcomed their daughter Harlow, in January 2008. Lionel became a grandfather for the second time when Nicole and her husband welcomed their second child, Sparrow, in September 2009.
Lionel told UK’s Daily Record, “I went through a panic – that’s the end of my career. But I’m having more fun now with the responsibility of being a grandpa – that is, playing with the baby and handing her back.”
