75 Years of Selling Poppies

Olive Cook vowed to never stop selling poppies after losing her husband to WW II after just two years of marriage.

“We just had two-and-a-half years together when he was killed on the submarine HMS Thunderbolt”, she tells  Daily Mail. “Losing my husband when I was just 21 years of age, I vowed to always sell poppies. He was a loving and genuine man, and I had great times with him in those couple of years we had together.” Now at the age of 91, Mrs. Cook has been selling poppies for a grand total of 75 years, and has sold over 30,000 poppies.

Proudly wearing her British Royal Legion Medal, alongside the Distinguished Service Medal awarded to her husband, Mrs. Cook stands tall to help raise £10,00o for Help for Heroes. She says, “I will never give up- it is important to remember the people who died in the wars, and are still dying now.”

Bill Wong is a 91-year-old tailor who has no intention of retiring.  He started working at his father’s downtown Vancouver Shop when he was just 12 years old.  Together with his brother Jack, they took over the business 60 years ago.  Wong does things the “old fashioned way”, as much of the work is done on his 75-year old sewing machine, and his payment methods are “cash and cheque only.”  He also says his best technique for getting the right fit is the, “eyeball method”, which he says is much more “superior” to a computer.

Being “old fashioned” hasn’t affected Wong’s business at all, in fact he continues to get new customers! 23-year old Jake Guo is new in town and wanted a great tailor. He said to The Province that, ” When you watch the movies there is an old guy chalking up a suit and that was what I was hoping for, and that is what you get here”. Wong has been amazed at how many new customers walk in the door every day. In talking to The Province about his 100-year old operation, Wong humbly said, “I enjoy this. This is what keeps me alive, it keeps me going”.
