Man running the Vancouver Sun RunMan Aiming for 200th Sub-3 hour Marathon 

Doug Kurtis is aiming for his 200th marathon under 3 hours this weekend. He already holds several records including running the most marathons (76) under 2:20, and having the longest span between his first sub 3:00 marathon and last.

His marathon career spans over 39 years, and he has run a marathon under 3 hours in 5 different decades. He almost retired in 1980, took a break in 1999 and now plans to retire from marathons after this race.

A simple task of crossing a crosswalk can become a life or death situation for an older adult. Often times as they reach the middle of the crosswalk, their time is up, and cars begin to go. It can be a terrifying situation for older individuals, and cities need to make appropriate changes to accompany the needs of the elderly.

New York has adopted “Age Friendly New York City”, which aims to make the city not only more accessible for the elderly, but to make New York more aware of the value of this older population. Other cities need to heed the example of New York, and make changes to accommodate the elderly.

Happy 86th birthday to Roger Moore on October 14th. He was the oldest actor to portray James Bond, from the ages of 45 to 58.  In 2004, Moore was voted ‘Best Bond’ in an Academy Awards poll.

Happy 70th Birthday to Penny Marshall on October 15. Although best known for her role in Laverne & Shirley, she also works as a director. The film Big was the first film directed by a woman to gross in excess of $100 million at the U.S. box office. She has also directed Awakenings, A League of Their Own, Cinderella Man and Bewitched.

Happy 67th Birthday to Suzanne Somers on October 16. She’s well known for her roles on Three’s Company and Step by Step. Recently she’s become an author and proponent of alternative medicine.

Happy 65th Birthday to Margot Kidder on October 17. In addition to playing Lois Lane in four Superman movies, she appeared in The Amityville Horror, Sisters, Crime and Punishment and continues to act.

Happy 55th Birthday to Alan Jackson on October 17. He has won 2 Grammys, 16 CMA Awards, 17 ACM Awards and sold more than 60 million records.
