World Masters Athletics Female Of The Year

Great grandmother Christa Bortignon has been named the 2013 World Masters Athletics female athlete of the year. Amazingly the 76-year-old only started competing in track in field events about 4 years ago.  The Vancouver, BC resident recently won 8 gold medals at the World Master’s Athletics Championships. She competes in 100-metres, 400-metres, high jump, javelin and heptathlon and others. “I really like the triple jump” Bortignon told Global News,  “Its like flying.” She holds numerous world records as well.

Nuts-SeedsGo Nuts!

A recent study found that people who ate nuts daily had up to a 20 percent reduction in mortality rates. The group had significantly fewer cancers, strokes, infections, and cases of kidney failure and cardiac disease. The benefits were seen from peanuts as well as pistachios, almonds, walnuts and other tree nuts. On top of having a lower mortality rate from eating nuts, you also have the added bonus of staying slimmer, not gaining weight, which is popular belief.

Observational studies cant determine cause and effect,  they can only suggest a connection; therefore, it is not known why nuts appear to cause lower mortality rates. Past studies have shown that it could be their unsaturated fatty acids, minerals, and other nutrients that lower cholesterol, and inflammation thus reduce other problems.
