October 1st was National Seniors day in Canada. The day is an occasion for all Canadians to celebrate and pay tribute to our seniors.

International Day of Older Persons!

Also on October 1st on this year is, International Day of Older Persons. It has been estimated that over the next fifty years, the number of older people will grow from about 600 million to almost 2 billion. This demographic change will likely come with its challenges, which is why International Day of Older Persons is so important as it raises the awareness to some of the issues.

The ageing population needs to be assured that they can grow old with dignity and be able to carry on as active citizens with full rights. It is very evident that older people make major contributions to society through volunteer work, knowledge/wisdom, helping families with various duties and responsibilities, as well as participating in the labor force. Its important that we honor the contributions they make to society, and that we assist and understand the difficulties and challenges that affect their lives.
